The striker is on a hot streak for his international team
Though Marcelo Bielsa has discussed being more concerned about Darwin Núñez’s positioning than his output for Uruguay, the Liverpool striker has nonetheless been consistent on the scoresheet as well for his international side.
His goal in Uruguay’s 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia in the Copa America last night made it seven goals in seven appearances, a run of form that Liverpool fans might be stumped by.
He scored his side’s second goal, far from an afterthought on the scoresheet, with a decisiveness lately that might remind fans of his precise finishes against the likes of Newcastle last season — but were absent in the patches that saw him score 18 in 54 appearances. Of course, the “appearance” label here is a bit specious, as his minutes-total of 3,027 equates to about 33 full matches, making that 18 goals number seem much healthier.
Regardless, Núñez’s goal-scoring form is coming at a good time for Bielsa’s side, as they top Group C and look to be in the pole position to advance to the quarter-finals. Due to superior goal difference, Uruguay is likely to qualify even if they are defeated by the US on Tuesday, but will go through in a more straightforward fashion with a win or draw.
