‘Nothing happened’: Klopp unhappy with what he saw Arsenal players keep getting away with during first-half

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has told Viaplay Fotball that he was unhappy with what he saw Arsenal players keep getting away with during the first-half of yesterday’s game.

Klopp’s men fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at the Emirates after brilliant displays from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Liverpool came from behind twice in the game and looked the better side for most of the first-half. But an underwhelming second-half led to Arsenal finding a winner through a Saka penalty.

Klopp had no complaints about the result but was angered by the yellow card Joe Gomez received in the second-half.

Speaking to Viaplay Fotball, Klopp was asked about a moment at half-time where he confronted officials.

“Yeah but there were a couple of different situations,” Klopp said.

“The result is the result, done. But Joe Gomez, yellow card. A defender, a yellow card for this throw-in situation.

“In the first-half, I don’t know how often and how long Arsenal was looking for an option in the throw-in, nothing happened and I’m fine with that.

“But then Joe is there and Mikel is having a go at the ref and he says ‘ok, yellow card’ from a distance. And you think ‘yellow card?!’

“Again, nothing to do with the result, just these situations don’t help. But you’re right – useless conversations.”

Gomez picked up a yellow card from referee Michael Oliver in the second-half for apparent time-wasting before taking a throw-in.

Klopp clearly feels that Arsenal players were doing exactly the same thing during the first-half when Liverpool were on top.

The German boss was also unhappy with Oliver awarding Arsenal a penalty in the 75th minute after Thiago’s challenge on Gabriel Jesus.

He said: “The situation around the penalty happens, I think everyone agrees we should’ve kicked that ball a bit earlier over the roof, we didn’t do that, the ball comes back, again, it’s very soft.”

Liverpool will feel aggrieved over the penalty, especially after they had an appeal turned down in the first-half after the ball struck Gabriel Magalhaes’ arm.

Despite the fact some decisions went against them, Liverpool were underwhelming in the second-half and Arsenal picked up a fully deserved win.
