Steve Nicol has suggested that Cody Gakpo looked particularly tired for Liverpool as they knocked Southampton out of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.
The Reds booked their quarter-final spot, with Lewis Koumas opening the scoring before Jayden Danns scored twice in the second-half to see off the Saints.
The scoreline may not show it, but Southampton had their chances. But Liverpool were able to put their Carabao Cup win to one side and get back to business.
Cody Gakpo looked tired as Liverpool win FA Cup tie
Once again, Jurgen Klopp had to put his faith in a number of young players. But there was also a handful of first-team stars who also started against Russell Martin’s side. And Cody Gakpo was one of those who would have been looking to impress.

Certainly, speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol felt that Gakpo did not look completely fresh for the tie.
“He looked tired. He looked heavy-legged to be honest. I said Danns had shown him the way to go with a little dink. But I think at the same time, if you are heavy-legged, then you’re not thinking clearly and that affects every single thing you do. But I thought Gakpo looked tired tonight,” he said.
Reds not faltering under the pressure
Gakpo’s form will be something of a concern for Liverpool. The 24-year-old has now only scored two goals in his last 10 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.
He does so many good things for the team. However, Liverpool are heading into a period of the season where one mistake could be so costly. And the Reds have so many key players on the sidelines right now.
Thankfully, Klopp’s kids proved once again that they are ready to handle a certain amount of pressure already.
