‘Not had a sniff’: BBC pundit thinks £19m Bournemouth player really struggled against Liverpool star today

BBC pundit Glenn Murray singled out Virgil van Dijk for praise after the Liverpool defender kept Dominic Solanke quiet today.

Dominic Solanke faced off against his old side once again on Sunday afternoon and headed into the game in arguably the best form of his career.

The 26-year-old has netted 12 times already in the Premier League this season, which is comfortably his best-ever return in England’s top flight.

But the English forward struggled to make an impact against his old side today and Glenn Murray believes that was largely down to Virgil van Dijk.

Solanke struggled against Van Dijk today

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Murray admitted that Solanke failed to get into the game during the first half.

“Dominic Solanke has been very well marshalled by Virgil van Dijk so far,” the former Brighton man said. “He’s not had a sniff.”

Solanke struggled similarly in the second half as both Ibrahima Konate and Van Dijk continued to dominate in the box.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the striker, who joined the Cherries from Liverpool for a fee worth £19 million back in January 2019.

After an underwhelming first half, the Reds also turned on the style during the second period.

Darwin Nunez produced a smart finish after an excellent through ball from Diogo Jota in the 49th minute.

Jota then went on to net a brace with two exceptional finishes, with the second the pick of the bunch. Nunez added another in stoppage time after a brilliant delivery from Joe Gomez.

Liverpool have typically put in brilliant performances in the second half of games this season and today was no different in that regard.

The win saw Jurgen Klopp’s men move five points clear at the top of the table having played a game more than second-placed Manchester City.

While Liverpool are yet to hit top gear this season, they continue to produce positive results, even in the absence of star man Mohamed Salah.
