‘Not entirely sure’: Pundit says he still hasn’t been convinced by £35m Liverpool player

Liverpool look like they’re getting closer and closer to being back to their very best.

The Reds were brilliant again at the weekend against Nottingham Forest as their attacking firepower was on show for all to see.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah all got on the scoresheet on Sunday, and the Reds’ attackers may well have enough to fire the Merseyside club to a league title.

However, despite a summer of rebuilding, questions are still being asked of Liverpool’s midfield.

Indeed, speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Gregor Robertson has been discussing his view on Liverpool’s midfield, and the pundit says he still isn’t convinced by Alexis Mac Allister playing in that holding midfield role for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Mac Allister unconvincing

Robertson shared his verdict on the Argentine.

“I’m still not entirely sure on Mac Allister being at the foot of this midfield in games where his defensive responsibilities are greater, but they’re so good going forwards and a big part of that is Nunez,” Robertson said.

Not his position

It’s not a shock to hear that Robertson isn’t convinced by Mac Allister in that holding role, because, quite simply, it isn’t his position.

The Argentine has often done his best work further forward for both Brighton and Argentina, and while he’s a capable number six, it’s not natural for him.

Liverpool didn’t really address that area in the summer, and while they’re making do with what they have, it is an achilles heel that could be exploited against stronger opposition this season.

Liverpool are heading in the right direction in terms of building out a fully fleshed-out squad, but that holding midfield area is still a glaring hole that needs addressing by the Reds’ recruitment team either in January or next summer.
