Trent Alexander-Arnold is moving further and further away from being a right-back at Liverpool.
The England international seems to finally be making his long-awaited transition into a midfield role, and, at the moment, he’s somewhat positionless in this Liverpool side.
Of course, taking Alexander-Arnold out of the backline will leave a gap at right-back, and Liverpool need to figure out who can fill that gap.
Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Gregor Robertson has been discussing this dilemma at Anfield, and he says that he has some doubts around Joe Gomez’s ability to play in this position going forwards.

Robertson shared his verdict on the 26-year-old.
“He is like, and it is a bit of a cliché, he’s a generational talent, it’s extraordinary that he doesn’t have a role, he did when he was a right-back, but it was exposed that he’s not good enough defensively to play as a full-back. So who is playing at right-back? Joe Gomez? He’s not been very convincing when he comes in,” Robertson said.
Too different
Make no mistake about it, Joe Gomez is a fantastic player, but he’s too different to Alexander-Arnold in that right-back position.
Alexander-Arnold is one of the most creative full-backs in history, while Gomez is a natural centre-half whose first instinct is to defend.
If Liverpool were to reshuffle things in this way on a permanent basis, the whole dynamic of the squad would change and their tactics would be affected.
In our view, Jurgen Klopp’s best bet may be to keep Alexander-Arnold in this quasi-right-back role for now, and perhaps sign a new centre-back in January who can cover more ground in order to make up for the England international’s attacking instincts.
Gomez is a great player, but he’s not a right-back.
