Cody Gakpo has been at Liverpool for over a year now, but, for some reason, it still feels like he hasn’t properly settled.
Indeed, Gakpo still feels like he’s fairly new to this team, and it doesn’t feel as though Jurgen Klopp quite knows how to use him.
He’s been used as a winger, a striker and even a midfielder at times, and it’s hard to quite put your finger on what Gakpo is as a player.
Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Tony Cascarino has been discussing Gakpo and his ability, and he reckons that he’s not a striking solution for Liverpool, claiming that he doesn’t exactly know what he’s meant to be as a player.

The pundit shared his verdict on the £37m man.
“Gakpo is not a solution in front of Nunez. I’m not sure what he is. He’s not a direct number nine, he’s a bit of a luxury, where do you play him? Zinchenko as well and not having Salah up against him was huge for Liverpool,” Cascarino said.
Tough
Cody Gakpo is a very versatile player, and that’s both a curse and a blessing at the same time.
While it’s great that Gakpo is able to play in all of these positions, it’s less than ideal to have a player who you don’t really know how to use.
Gakpo is clearly a talent, he’s shown that on numerous occasions, but wherever he plays there’s always this nagging feeling that he could be better utilised in another role.
Jurgen Klopp hasn’t quite been able to crack this code just yet, but with a new manager set to come in over the summer, perhaps Gakpo will find a role and excel at Anfield more starting next season.
Figuring out Gakpo’s best position certainly isn’t easy.
