Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed who he’d like to take over from Jurgen Klopp when the Reds boss leaves Anfield at the end of the season.
The Liverpool icon, writing in The Telegraph, says fellow Anfield cult hero Xabi Alonso would be a great shout to take the Reds reins.
Klopp stunned the football world on Friday when he announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp said in a video shared by the Liverpool media team. “I understand that it’s a shock.”
The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was due to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.
Xabi Alonso ‘was born to be a Liverpool player’
Alonso, who has been shining at Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, has been mentioned as a suitable successor at Liverpool.
And Carragher believes the 42-year-old would be a great shout for the Anfield hotseat, because like Klopp, he just has that connection with the Kop.

“That’s one of the reasons why Xabi Alonso is already being considered the natural heir. From day one, it was like Xabi was born to be a Liverpool player.
“As he is my former teammate, it is no surprise that so many are clamouring for him to be appointed. I would love Xabi to get the chance.”
Xabi Alonso a star as a player and as a coach
Alonso starred for Liverpool during his playing career, making 210 appearances for the Reds and registering 18 goals and 20 assists.
He helped Rafa Benitez’s side win the Champions League in 2005, and also lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield with the Reds.
Alonso also won the World Cup and two European championships with Spain, another Champions League with Real Madrid, and numerous league titles with Los Blancos and Bayern Munich.
As a manager, Alonso has taken Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga – four points clear of Bayern Munich – after guiding them to last year’s Europa League semi-finals.
