'No matter what the stats say': Craig Burley says Klopp's tactics aren't getting best out of £55m Liverpool star

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has enjoyed a solid start to life at Anfield.

However, ESPN pundit Craig Burley believes that we still haven’t seen the best of the Reds summer signing.

Speaking on ESPN FC’s latest podcast, Burley says this is due to where Mac Allister is currently playing for Liverpool.

The 24-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool from Brighton this summer for a reported £35million fee, potentially rising to £55million.

Mac Allister has done very well at Anfield so far, starting in all but one of the Reds’ Premier League games to date. He only missed out against Brentford due to suspension.

The Argentina star has been playing at No. 6 for Liverpool, which isn’t his main position, but he has been impressing nonetheless.

On ESPN FC, host Dan Thomas told Burley how they’ve run the analytics and two of the key players for Liverpool have been Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

“And it’s strange because I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Mac Allister at Liverpool,” replied Burley.

“No matter what the stats say, he’s playing slightly deeper than he was at Brighton, that’s due to personnel.

“I think Szoboszlai has certainly caught the eye more. I think there’s more to come from those two when they get the right blend behind them and allow them to push up the field a little bit.”

Exciting to see what future holds for Mac Allister at Liverpool – TBR View

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has struck gold when it came to signing Mac Allister. He has been superb for the Reds, even in an unfamiliar position.

It’s testament to Mac Allister’s qualities and attitude that he’s still doing so well despite playing in a less familiar position.

While he has what it takes to stay at No. 6 long-term, it would still be exciting to see how Mac Allister fares if he moves further up. For instance, if Liverpool go and sign a new defensive midfielder.

Obviously the summer was pretty intense in terms of the work the Reds needed to do with their midfield, but in January, they can recalibrate further and we could then see Mac Allister play in his best position.
