Newcastle have accepted a £33M bid from Brighton for Yankuba Minteh as they scramble to meet PSR rules.
With Newcastle United needing to make at least one major sale before July 1st in order to meet the Premier League profit and sustainability rules, the past 24 hours brought a surge in stories linking Liverpool with a move for left winger Anthony Gordon.
Now, though, a £33M bid for Yankuba Minteh by Brighton has been accepted by Newcastle and could end the Reds’ hopes of landing Everton academy graduate Gordon, who has listed Anfield as his favourite stadium and Steven Gerrard as his footballing hero.
Despite that, there are whispers a Liverpool move for Gordon—a 23-year-old homegrown talent with upside whose arrival many would expect to mean a departure for Luis Diaz—isn’t quite dead yet and that for Newcastle the Minteh sale may not be enough.
Meanwhile, there have also been a surge in stories over the past 24 hours about Chelsea interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, which taken together with the Gordon rumours and now Minteh’s sale speaks to Newcastle’s difficult financial position.
Of the three, it’s Minteh they were always most willing to sell, with the player impressing for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot on loan at Feyenoord last season and some previous chatter that suggested the Reds might even be interested in signing him.
Now, the question for Liverpool—and Chelsea—is if Newcastle will still be compelled to sell Gordon or Isak. Earlier reports claimed Newcastle wanted Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah back as part of a Gordon deal but the Reds rejected the idea out of hand.
