Sometimes in football you get a player who just does things differently, and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is certainly one of those.
Innovators don’t come around in football very often, but Alexander-Arnold may well be one of the most influential players of his generation when it comes to changing the way football is viewed.
The Liverpool star has somehow become one of the best playmakers in world football from right-back – previously the least-exciting position on the pitch, while he’s also been at the forefront of the new inverted full-back movement over the past few months.
Speaking on CBS, Jamie Carragher has been picking his Team of the Year, and the pundit has, unsurprisingly, chosen Alexander-Arnold at right-back, claiming that he’s a completely unique player who is unlike anyone else.

Carragher shared his verdict on the full-back.
“Right, here’s our team. We have Maignan in goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold is absolutely unique as a right full-back, never seen anything like him before,” Carragher said.
Revolutionary
In years to come we may well discuss Alexander-Arnold as a true footballing revolutionary.
Carragher once said that no young footballer ever wants to be a full-back, famously saying that nobody wants to grow up to be a Gary Neville.
However, kids these days probably do want to grow up to be a Trent Alexander-Arnold. He’s changed the meaning of what a full-back has to be. He’s shown just how much that position can affect a game in an attacking sense, and he may well have inspired a young generation of players who want to emulate his style.
Don’t be shocked if in the next 10 years we start seeing more and more technically brilliant full-backs coming through.
Alexander-Arnold’s style of play may well shape football for years to come, and that’s a testament to just how brilliant he is.
