'Needs to get better': Pundit says £37m Liverpool player has simply got to improve after seeing him last night

Getting into the Liverpool starting XI is a hard task these days and Jurgen Klopp is blessed with a number of options across his squad.

The Liverpool boss has had to deal with injuries this season but is starting to see a full deck of cards return. Indeed, with three competitions still all to play for, Klopp knows he will need his whole squad.

Last night in the 6-1 win over Sparta Prague, the Liverpool boss opted to go strong, albeit with a few younger and fringe players included.

One of those fringe players was Cody Gakpo. The Dutch forward scored twice on the night to help his side to a big win. However, speaking on the Official Liverpool podcast, former left-back Stephen Warnock has said the forward needs to do more.

Cody Gakpo told he needs to improve for Liverpool

“I think if you look at Gakpo’s role within the team, it’s the supporting act. He’s got know that. If you’re going into a game, like Man City, Man United etc, then your forward three is Nunez, Diaz and Salah, and he’s the support. If Jota comes back, he goes in front of Gakpo as well and it becomes a choice between those four and he’s behind them. But he’s great at coming in and just doing his little bit. He’s not at the level of those guys but I agree, he can get better. I think he needs to get better as well cos I think there’s sometimes a break down when he plays. He’s not as quick, he slows it down a bit in and around the area but, that’s his style, that’s why he’s been brought in,” Warnock said.

Warnock did comment further on Gakpo, insisting the £37m they paid was a great deal for the club overall, given his contribution.

Still contributing

Warnock makes a valid point here but there’s not a lot else Cody Gakpo can do other than contribute when he does play.

As mentioned, the likes of Salah, Nunez and Diaz aren’t being shifted right now so it’s hard for Gakpo to ever really get going.

But, he does have his moments and bagging twice last night will do his cause no harm. Over time, Gakpo will prove useful for the Reds and in certain games, his more reserved style will be needed.
