Liverpool are on the hunt for a new manager, and there’s one name that keeps cropping up in discussions.
Indeed, Xabi Alonso has been touted as a potential top candidate for Liverpool, while others have also been mentioned.
One man who has been tipped for the job in the past is Pep Lijnders, and speaking on BBC 606, Robbie Savage has been discussing the idea of the Dutchman moving into the big seat at Anfield.
Savage has been comparing Lijnders to Alonso, and he says that the Dutchman would be an even riskier appointment than the Spaniard due to the fact he’s never managed at the very top level.

Savage spoke about the idea of Lijnders becoming the Liverpool manager.
“There isn’t the next Jurgen Klopp out there, Alonso to me would be too much of a risk, I’d rather him be the next manager after he’s had a few more seasons,” One caller said.
“Pep Lijnders would be more of a risk, he’s not a manager, he’s an assistant manager, being a manager is completely and utterly different, completely different, and you’re saying Alonso is a risk,” Savage said.
Risky
Savage is right, this move would be a real risk, but at the same time, everyone has to start somewhere.
Let’s not forget, some of the very best managers of this generation started as assistants.
Jose Mourinho worked under Bobby Robson for a long time, Mikel Arteta worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, as did Championship table-topping manager Enzo Maresca.
Sometimes, all a good coach needs is an opportunity, and after working so well at Liverpool for a long time, perhaps Lijnders is ready for this job.
This would be a left-field choice, but it’s one that could seriously pay off.
