Jorg Schmadtke has suggested that he told Liverpool not to sign Dominik Szoboszlai last summer because of his price tag.

The Reds had a very good summer window, didn’t they? They made some fantastic deals, and Schmadtke was the man calling the shots at the time. He has now made an admission about Liverpool‘s move for Szoboszlai.

Jorg Schmadtke suggests he didn’t want Liverpool to sign Dominik Szoboszlai

Jorg Schmadtke was Liverpool’s sporting director in the last two transfer windows.

The 59-year-old was relieved of his duties at the end of the January window, but he was responsible for almost all the deals the Reds pulled off for this season.

Liverpool signed Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig in the summer for a fee of £60 million last summer (Sky Sports). The Hungarian became the club’s fourth-most expensive player in history after Darwin Nunez, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

Szoboszlai is a fan favourite at Anfield, and nobody is really talking about his price tag. However, Schmadtke has now admitted that he wasn’t too keen to sign him last summer because of how much he cost.

He told Zeit Online: “Now in Liverpool, there was someone who cost €70 million, Szoboszlai, who we brought from Leipzig. Then I said: It’s too expensive.

“From today’s perspective, that was a misjudgment on my part. The boy was an important Liverpool player from day one. He performed better than I would have expected him to.”

Szoboszlai has been a great signing

Dominik Szoboszlai has done really well for Liverpool since joining the club last summer.

The 23-year-old is a fantastic talent. He has been involved in nine goals already for the Reds, and he has shown that he has the potential to increase that tally in the coming months and years.

£60 million definitely felt like a lot of money in the summer, and although Szoboszlai is yet to justify that big figure, we feel he will as he progresses in the famous red shirt.

It will be interesting to see how many goals and assists Szoboszlai will end the season on in May.
