Mikel Arteta calls up 17-year-old to Arsenal training pre-Liverpool, he's 'one of the most talented youngsters' at N5

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been putting his players through their paces ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool.

A huge top-of-the-table clash awaits at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp‘s Reds and Arteta’s Gunners lock horns for the chance to go (or stay) to the summit.

At present, just one point separates table-topping Arsenal and third-placed Aston Villa, who could go top as they play on Friday night.

On Friday, Arsenal’s media team published photos of their players in training, and one of Hale End’s top talents once again featured in the Colney session.

The 17-year-old midfielder has been featuring fairly regularly in Arsenal training sessions as well as featuring prominently for the Gunners Under-21s.

This season, Lewis-Skelly has made 12 appearances at youth level, and made the bench against Brighton last time out, as well as against Nice in the Champions League.

Arsenal youth coach Jack Wilshere sung the youngster’s praises back in April, describing him as a “top kid” when speaking to The Athletic.

Last year, Arsenal youth team expert Jeorge Bird wrote on his website that Lewis-Skelly is ‘undoubtedly one of the most talented youngsters at the club and has much potential’.

It’s great to see Arteta continuing to give the youngster time in training with the seniors. This suggests he’s holding his own, and perhaps familiarising himself with surroundings and players that he’ll be playing with in the next couple of years.

Lewis-Skelly is yet to make his senior debut for Arsenal, but surely it’s only a matter of time before Arteta decides to give him minutes, perhaps in the FA Cup or in the league towards the end of the season.
