'Might not start': Pundit thinks 27-year-old Liverpool player could be dropped if they make a cup final

Andy Townsend has given his verdict on Liverpool forward Diogo Jota after watching him in action against Bournemouth.

The former Chelsea player and talkSPORT pundit has praised Jota but he does not think that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would include him in the starting lineup in a cup final.

So, what has Andy Townsend said about Diogo Jota? Let’s take a look.

Andy Townsend comments on Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

Well, Liverpool continued their march towards the Premier League title with a 4-0 victory over Bournemouth away from home in the Premier League this past weekend.

All four goals came in the second half. Uruguay international striker Darwin Nunez scored two of them. Portugal international forward Diogo Jota also found the back of the net twice.

Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend was impressed by Jota’s performance and believes that he has been a bargain signing for Liverpool for £41 million (BBC Sport).

The talkSPORT pundit has noted the attributes of Jota that make him a special player, but he does not think that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would start the 27-year-old in a cup final.

Townsend said on talkSPORT (6:14 am, January 22, 2024): “Jota, for what they paid for him, I can’t remember how much it was that Liverpool paid for Diogo Jota but he’s a good player.

“I think he’s a very clever footballer as well Ally as he’s not the absolute quickest. Of course, he’s sharp, but he’s not grease lightning.

“But he gets himself in good areas and great in the air and again he always looks like he’s going to score goals to me and he always does.

“Liverpool’s best team, if everyone’s fit for a cup final or something, he might not start but I do think he’s a good player.”

My View: Diogo Jota a valuable player for Liverpool

Diogo Jota is not guaranteed a place in the Liverpool starting lineup. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz are the three regular forwards for the Reds.

However, we should not underestimate the importance of Jota in the current Liverpool team. The 27-year-old is always able to make an impact, whether that be coming on as a substitute or when starting occasionally.

Jota has made nine starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool so far this season. He has scored seven goals and given two assists in those matches. That shows just how good he is at scoring goals.
