Liverpool have officially convinced Michael Edwards to return to Anfield and shape the post Jurgen Klopp era.
The 44-year-old made headlines in his role as Director of Football at Liverpool, bringing the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to Merseyside while also selling fringe players for remarkable fees.
The £32m sale of Christian Benteke springs to mind, while it was also a masterstroke to receive £19m for Dominic Solanke shortly after signing the striker on a free transfer.
Interestingly, the man from Southampton has actually been hired as CEO of Football – and is expected to appoint Richard Hughes to do his old job as Director of Football.
Now – however – Michael Edwards could do something at Liverpool which Todd Boehly has been widely criticised for doing at Chelsea…
Michael Edwards could upset fans in CEO role at Liverpool
Well – according to The Athletic – Fenway Sports Group (FSG) want Edwards to identify, and then run, another European side as Liverpool aim to get involved in multi-club ownership.
The likes of Crystal Palace take part in this, as co-owner John Textor also owns Lyon, Botafogo and RWD Molenbeek.
Boehly does the same at Chelsea after purchasing Strasbourg – the American obtained the French club for £65m back in June 2023 and took 100% control.
However, the 50-year-old has been regularly criticised by the French club’s supporters for effectively ruining them, with frequent protests aimed at his BlueCo consortium.
Photo by SEBASTIEN BOZON/AFP via Getty ImagesAfter the January transfer window ended – a month which saw Strasbourg legend Matz Sels sold to Nottingham Forest – supporters held up a banner which read “all of our fears about the BlueCo project, confirmed in this transfer window” as detailed by the Guardian.
Todd Boehly disaster must be noted and learned from
There is a belief that Boehly uses Strasbourg to benefit Chelsea – effectively seeing the French outfit as a development ground for young talent owned by the Blues, such as Angelo Gabriel and Andrey Santos.
Strasbourg are also just a point above the relegation zone at the time of writing, so BlueCo’s methods are not really benefitting the French outfit at all.

Therefore, Edwards needs to be very careful with how he goes about finding – and running – another European side along with his duties at Liverpool.
