152 Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool ended up being the most dominant news of the entire January transfer window in the end.
The German will leave Anfield in the summer, along with his staff, and it leaves Liverpool in the position of having to rebuild ahead of next season.
Of course, while Klopp’s decision to leave has seen some fans of Liverpool distraught, you suspect other clubs will be relieved the German is on his way out. Klopp’s exit should, in theory, open the door to the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and United all getting closer to Manchester City.
At City, of course, Pep Guardiola is losing his biggest rival. And speaking to the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, City journalist Jack Gaughan has shared how the news has gone down at The Etihad.

Speaking about the decision from Klopp to leave Anfield, Gaughan shared what he’d been hearing from the City side of things.
“I don’t think they will do (stop smiling) will they. Look, there’s an element of they think they’ve seen him off. Someone mentioned to me last week, which you know, fair enough. Guardiola will look at it and think Liverpool will need a bit of a rebuild and a new manager to get his feet under the table and I think he’ll look at the rest of the league and probably feel this is there for the taking. I don’t think Klopp would have stayed as long as he did without Guardiola and I don’t think Guardiola would have stayed as long without Klopp,” Gaughan said.
City have free run
There is absolutely no doubt that Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool has opened a door for Manchester City.
They have battled toe to toe over the years with City coming out on top more often than not but now, this gives City an even cleaner run at things.
Of course, another club could step up and do the business but nobody has quite come as close to upsetting City’s mojo as Liverpool have under Klopp.
It’s little wonder, then, that there is some delight at The Etihad over Klopp’s departure.
