Ben Foster says one Liverpool player has massively stepped up in recent months and gets in his Premier League team of the season so far ahead of one Manchester City star.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been absolutely outstanding for the Reds this season. Of course, much of the talk over the last couple of years has concerned the limitations Alexander-Arnold has defensively.
But Jurgen Klopp appears to have found a system which plays to the 25-year-old’s strengths. He is allowed to roam forward into those areas where he is so dangerous, safe in the knowledge that the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Wataru Endo are often covering for him.
Ben Foster lauds Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold has two goals and nine assists in all competitions this season. It was also the England international’s free-kick which led to the own goal which gave Liverpool the lead against Arsenal in the FA Cup at the weekend. Alexander-Arnold was lauded for his performance against the Gunners.

“Do you know what? This is a tough decision to make because I agree with what you’re saying here. I think Kyle Walker still at this moment in time is probably the best right-back in the world, maybe. He’s in the top three in the world. He has to be. And again, the best right-back probably the Premier League has ever seen,” he said.
“I think for this season, I think Trent has just been that little bit more of a game-changer. He offers just a little bit more going forward. And bearing in mind the team I want to play at, I want some attacking wing-backs, I do. I want them getting forward, I want them getting inside. I want the assists, I want the goals from them. And I think for me, Trent in the last couple of months specifically, has really stepped his game up, massively stepped his game up in fact. And that’s the reason why I’m going to go for Trent at right-back.”
Reds may now be unlocking 25-year-old’s full potential
Obviously, Kyle Walker and Alexander-Arnold are very different right-backs. Walker is defensively unbelievable. The £45 million Manchester City star boasts frightening pace and backs himself in a race against any winger in the world.
But he does not offer anything like the quality Alexander-Arnold has going forward. The pair have played a similar number of games for their respective clubs, but Alexander-Arnold has more than four times the number of assists.
And now that Liverpool have a system which seems to play to his strengths, Alexander-Arnold appears to have the perfect platform to go on and realise his full potential.
