'Looking back': Wayne Rooney shares why he 'hated' playing against Liverpool at Anfield

Wayne Rooney has been speaking about a number of items on the Premier League agenda and addressed playing at Anfield in doing so.

The former England striker had a good period against Liverpool while at Manchester United and scored some big goals in some big games against the Reds.

However, given his Merseyside roots and Everton ties, a trip to Anfield was always a bit more special and there was plenty of heated moments to look back on as well.

And speaking to the official Premier League YouTube channel this weekend, Rooney spoke out on why he hated going to play at Anfield.

“I didn’t enjoy it at Anfield. I used to to hate going, just my emotions got the better of me a lot of the time. I just wanted to win that much, so didn’t enjoy them but looking back, had some good moments, scored a few goals against them and obviously beat them more times than we lost,” Rooney said.

Rooney at Anfield always had extra spice

To be fair, Wayne Rooney is not the only player to be met with a hostile reception from the Liverpool fans at Anfield.

It’s happened so many times over the years to different players that you’d lose count.

However, Rooney is definitely in the category of players who perhaps got a bit more stick than your bog standard Premier League rival player.

Clearly, Rooney remembers the trips to Liverpool’s home with mixed emotions, and this is a player that did well against them as well.

As expected, the Anfield atmosphere can get to the very best and it seems like even someone with a personality like Wayne Rooney wasn’t averse to it either.

Of course, Rooney had the last laugh with the trophies he won at Man United. But it’s clear Liverpool and Anfield got to him.
