Football journalist Simon Phillips has backed reports that Liverpool are interested in Chelsea star Mason Mount.
The Blues midfielder will enter the final 18 months of his contract in January. Chelsea are desperate to tie him down to a new deal, but if they fail to do so in the next few months, Liverpool could pounce.

Mount is Chelsea through and through.
The playmaker joined the club’s academy when he was just six years old and has come through the ranks to become the player he is today. The 23-year-old, branded as ‘phenomenal’ by Antonio Rudiger, has played over 180 times for Chelsea so far, but talks over a new deal at Stamford Bridge haven’t been going smoothly, if reports are to be believed.
The Guardian reported last month that discussions have been put on hold after the two parties failed to reach an agreement. The Telegraph then revealed that Chelsea will have to offer the Englishman a massive £300,000-a-week deal to convince him to stay.
Now, Phillips has claimed that Liverpool are watching Mount’s situation at Chelsea and are waiting to see if an opportunity arises for them to pounce at some point in 2023.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “There are a lot of English clubs watching this situation. Liverpool, I know to be one of them. They’re keeping an eye on it.
“If it’s (a new contract at Chelsea) not going to be signed, they’re (Liverpool) going to be there waiting.”

Foden is arguably the best young English player out there along with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.
The Manchester City man trains with some of the best players in the world under Pep Guardiola every day – so he knows a top-quality player when he sees one. He thinks Mount belongs in that category.
Back in 2021, Foden called Mount a “top player” who’s “really difficult” to play against. Just before this year’s World Cup, the Manchester City star raved about the Chelsea man again, saying he likes him a lot because of his ability to receive the ball “in the pocket on the half-turn and can make the killer pass or shoot from distance.”
Mount is definitely a phenomenal player and if Liverpool can get him, they should. However, we have a feeling he’ll end up signing a new deal at his boyhood club.
