Liverpool reportedly sounding out 44-year-old who Gary Neville said has his team 'playing like Real Madrid'

Liverpool will need to bring in a new manager this summer after Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

The Reds‘ current frontrunner, according to many reports, is Xabi Alonso, but he’s not the only manager apparently on the Anfield radar.

Speculation linking Liverpool with Brighton and Hove Albion‘s Roberto De Zerbi has been intensifying in recent days.

According to the Guardian, the Reds have made an informal check to see whether the 44-year-old would be interested in the future vacancy at Anfield.

With Bayern Munich also keen on Alonso, Liverpool are looking at backup options, and they’ve apparently made a tentative enquiry for De Zerbi.

The Italian has made a huge impact at the Amex Stadium, impressing on a relatively modest budget and building on Graham Potter’s prior good work.

Indeed, Gary Neville previously said that De Zerbi was one of a handful of managers who has got his team playing like Real Madrid.

Last year, he told the Gary Neville podcast, via Sportskeeda: “What really damages the likes of Erik ten Hag and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho, they’ve all spent £300million, £400million.

“But De Zerbi at Brighton, [Ange] Postecoglou at Spurs, and others like them have come in and in three to four months they’ve got them playing like Real Madrid.

“That’s the problem they’ve got. It’s been shown that you can come in and have an impact on players, patterns of play, style, in three to four months.

“We are still sat here eight years after Louis van Gaal leaves and haven’t seen a pattern of play, a combination that you see repeatedly.”

De Zerbi certainly seems to fit the bill for Liverpool. He’s a young, talented and charismatic manager with a huge future ahead of him and has already shown he has what it takes in the Premier League.
