Liverpool could land the Mohamed Salah of sporting directors.
That may sound bonkers but Ricky Massara has been talked of in that way.
Liverpool are not only looking for a new manager but also a new sporting director.
Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Liverpool this summer and his coaching staff will be following him out of Anfield.
Liverpool have also seen sporting director Jorg Schmadtke leave the club, meaning they must find a replacement.
Reports suggest that Liverpool want to land a sporting director soon, with Massara believed to be a target…
Ricky Massara to Liverpool?
The Athletic claim that Massara is under consideration for the big job at Anfield.
Massara left AC Milan last summer having worked alongside Paolo Maldini at the San Siro.
Massara played a key role in helping Milan move forward, landing the likes of Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao and Fikayo Tomori.
The Italian left last summer though and could join Liverpool, where he would become the latest ex-Roma man to make the move to Merseyside.
Alisson and Mohamed Salah both joined Liverpool from Roma and Massara worked with the Serie A side before leaving in 2019.
What’s interesting is that Massara has actually been called the ‘Salah of directors’.
Walter Sabatini, the man Massara worked under at Palermo, suggested in 2021 that Roma made a ‘serious’ mistake by letting him go.
Photo by Silvia Lore/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesSabatini made huge money for Roma by selling Alisson and Salah, and suggested that Massara gave him ‘the same satisfaction’ in terms of helping produce a success story.
Sabatini even called Massara the ‘Salah of directors’, which is pretty huge praise even if comes from a place of personal connection.
“Massara? It was a serious mistake to send him away from Roma,” said Sabatini. “Massara gives me the same satisfaction as Salah, he established himself at Liverpool, like Alisson. Massara is the Salah of directors. I hope he succeeds,” he added.
Massara certainly found some great talent for Milan and that may just see him land the Liverpool job.
There may even be a certain irony here as Massara could move to Liverpool and then receive an offer from Saudi Arabia for Salah.
The Egyptian winger will be wanted again this summer and Massara may be tasked with finding a replacement if a huge offer arrives.
