The 25-year-old Spain and Real Sociedad star would fit the bill as the Reds seek out a ball-playing defensive specialist in midfield.

With the start of the Premier League season less than two weeks away now and Liverpool still yet to make any moves in the transfer market, some fans had begun to worry that reinforcements for new manager Arne Slot might not be coming.

Twenty-four hours after club-connected journalists sought to calm nerves by signalling that at the very least signing a new defensive midfielder was a top priority—and hinting the Reds were closing on a top target—there are signs the wait might be nearly over.

The target hinted at Tuesday by The Athletic’s David Ornstein appears today to have been confirmed as Martín Zubimendi, the 25-year-old Spain and Real Sociedad midfielder and defensive specialist with a reported €60M release clause.

A wave of confirmation he’s the target comes via multiple sources, including David Lynch, Fabrizio Romano, and perhaps most tellingly The Times’ Paul Joyce. All frame it as a case of exploring and considering, but Liverpool watchers will expect it’s more than that.

Such a widespread, coordinated confirmation wouldn’t be being made without the sign-off of the club, and getting the fans fired up about a new marquee signing only to then have it not happen would very much not be in the club’s interest.

Zubimendi was part of the Spain side that beat England at Euro 2024 this summer and a player who in the past signalled he would only leave Sociedad for Barcelona or Madrid. If a deal does get done, it would be a massive transfer win for the Reds.
