A deal that would have sent Gomez to Newcastle and Gordon to the Reds collapsed after Newcastle made other sales to meet PSR.

With a month to go until the 2024-25 Premier League season kicks off, it’s fair to say the Reds’ summer transfer window has been exceptionally quiet with no senior signings and the only departures those of players at the end of their contracts.

That could have been much different, though, with multiple reports today claiming a deal that would see Newcastle buy Reds centre half Joe Gomez for £45M while Liverpool would buy Magpie winger Anthony Gordon for £75M was fully agreed.

That deal, though, fell through a full month ago now with medicals booked for the players in Leipzig in the midst of England’s Euros run after Newcastle made other sales to meet Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules by June 30th.

At the time, Liverpool’s interest in Gordon became public but the only rumours involving Liverpool players pointed towards Newcastle interest in rising star Jarell Quansah and not a hint of a whisper concerning veteran England international Gomez.

With Newcastle backing out after meeting PSR via the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson and Gordon appearing to have made peace with staying at his current club, it seems unlikely that a deal involving him would now be revived.

However, the emergence of the story a full month after the fact—in addition to highlighting just how quiet Liverpool can keep their business in the market—means that Gomez’ future feels rather less certain now than it did before the news broke.
