The Italian international brings depth and potential upside as a transfer target of opportunity for the Reds.

Liverpool are set to secure their first senior signing for the 2024-25 season today after moving quickly to land a transfer target of opportunity when Juventus forward and Italy international Federico Chiesa because available for a cut-rate price.

That’s the story today as less than 48 hours after rumours emerged that the Reds were moving to sign Chiesa, transfer hype man Fabrizio Romano—whose past reporting here has been confirmed on the Liverpool end and who appears to have connections in the player’s camp—is claiming the deal is 100% done.

The 26-year-old forward, who can capably deputize for Mohamed Salah at right wing and effectively play in any of the four attacking positions in Arne Slot’s Liverpool system, is a true value signing at just €15M.

That cut-rate price for a player once rated as an €80M+ forward reflects that Chiesa was entering the final year of his contract at Juventus, that he was not seen as fitting into head coach Thiago Motta’s plans for the coming season, and that he has missed much of two of the past three seasons due to injury.

The good news for Liverpool is that following an ACL in 2021-22 and a recovery year in 2022-23 marked by numerous secondary injuries, Chiesa played more than 2,500 minutes last season and was effective for Italy at the Euros this summer—where he clocked a top speed only eclipsed by Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool last year.
