Liverpool have done 'major work' to try and sign 'sensational' PL midfielder - journalist

With the Premier League grinding to a halt due to the World Cup, Liverpool can take stock and plan for the rest of the season.

The January transfer window is also on the horizon. And the Reds could well delve into the market in order to bolster their ranks.

Midfield is an area Liverpool could really do with bolstering. Particularly considering three midfielders are out of contract in the summer.

The Reds did bring in Arthur Melo on a loan deal last summer. However, he remains on the sidelines with a thigh injury which required surgery.

Now, journalist Graeme Bailey has spoken about other midfielders that Liverpool reportedly looked at in the summer and could look at again.

‘Manchester United and Barcelona amongst those who had shown an interest’

The reporter told TEAMtalk that Ruben Neves was in the Reds’ sights, and they had done “major work” on the Wolves ace.

However, Bailey is unsure whether new Molineux manager Julen Lopetegui would be willing to lose Neves in January.

“Liverpool did a lot of work towards the end of the window,” he told TEAMtalk.

“But in the end instead of spending they went with Arthur – a deal that that has not been a success under any measure.

“But as well as Arthur they also did major work on Konrad Laimer and Ruben Neves.

“Neves has been linked with a number of clubs in recent times with Manchester United and Barcelona amongst those who had shown an interest in the past 12 months or so.

“But whether he is available in January remains to be seen, as new boss Julen Lopetegui won’t be wanting to lose any of his big names.”

Neves is a ‘sensational’ player with considerable Premier League experience and is just 25 years old.

He’d be a good shout for Liverpool. But as Bailey says, it remains to be seen whether Wolves will cash in on him mid-season.
