Following a successful loan with Austrian double-winners Sturm Graz, Jaros could be in line to inherit the backup job for the Reds.
With some of Liverpool’s most established stars still on their summer breaks following Euro and Copa America duties over the summer, pre-season brings with it a chance for players who spent last season in the first team fringes or out on loan to impress.
That’s as true at goalkeeper as anywhere else, with Alisson Becker not yet back in training following a summer spent with the Brazilian national team, and after a year at Sturm Graz in the Bundesliga impressing is what 23-year-old Vitezslav Jaros wants to do.
“I’m getting into it, catching up with the guys that have been back for two weeks,” Jaros said after he and his teammates landed in the USA. “But it’s been enjoyable—new surroundings, new staff and new people. I’m trying to impress and do the best I can.”
Jaros’ 2023-24 season exceeded expectations, with the young goalkeeper playing 21 times for Sturm Graz and playing a key role in their domestic league and cup double—unheard of in an Austrian Bundesliga dominated by RB Salzburg in recent seasons.
With most still expecting 25-year-old backup Caoimhin Kelleher to depart later this summer in search of a number one role, a strong showing now in pre-season could set up Jaros to inherit the backup job for the Reds himself for the next season or two.
“It was brilliant, enjoyable, playing games and winning something as well,” Jaros added of his time spent in Austria. “I think I’ve developed quite a lot. With games, you get match experience and game management and everything. It was brilliant for me.”
