Liverpool could actually hire a friend of Michael Edwards to work underneath him as Director of Football – Richard Hughes.

That is according to Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports.

So, what is the situation involving Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes for Liverpool fans to digest? Let’s take a look…

Liverpool could hire Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards

Well – according to Fabrizio Romano – Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are trying very hard to convince Edwards to come back to Liverpool as Director of Football.

Jorg Schmadtke – who is currently in that position – is set to leave with Jurgen Klopp this summer.

Edwards is believed to be against returning as Director of Football and instead wants full control in more of a “CEO of football” role.

Now, Jacobs has expanded on Romano’s initial update.

The CBS Sports journalist claims that – if Edwards does accept an offer to become CEO of football at Anfield – Hughes could be hired to work below him as Director of Football.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Edwards and Hughes – who currently works as Director of Football at Bournemouth – are close friends.

Richard Hughes signings

The one thing every fan wants to know when it comes to potential Director of Football appointments is, who have they signed before?

In regards to Hughes, the 44-year-old has overseen some smart deals.

The Glaswegian signed Callum Wilson from Coventry for just £3m back in 2014, before the striker eventually moved to Newcastle for £20m and also became an England international.

Hughes also signed Tyrone Mings – another player who eventually went on to play for England – from Ipswich for £8m before selling him to Aston Villa for £25m.

Furthermore, the Scot signed Nathan Ake from Chelsea for £20m before the Dutchman eventually joined Manchester City for £41m – some impressive business, to say the least.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Hughes and Edwards could arrive at Liverpool together.
