Dominik Szoboszlai actually helped Liverpool set a new club record when scoring against Sparta Prague on Thursday.

The Hungary international came off the bench to slot home Liverpool’s fifth and final goal in the 5-1 UEFA Europa League Round of 16 victory.

So, what club record has Dominik Szoboszlai set at Liverpool? Let’s take a look…

Well, the Liverpool No.8 became the 22nd substitute to score a goal for the Reds this season.

It means substitutes have now scored more goals for Liverpool this term than in any other campaign throughout history, overtaking the 21 goals from the bench witnessed in the 2005/06 season.

It was Michael Reid – Football Data Editor for Opta – who posted the statistic on X.

What a fascinating accomplishment for Jurgen Klopp – to say the least.

This record just goes to show how well the German has used his squad this season.

While some managers tend to use the same 13 or 14 players on a weekly basis, Klopp has delved deep into his resources, putting his trust in academy talents and fringe players at crucial stages of the season.

Having the boldness to do that is one thing, but for these players to actually be delivering from the bench as well shows how effective a man manager the Stuttgart-born tactician is too.

Liverpool record should actually be higher

In truth, Liverpool should have 23 goals from substitutes – we cannot understand why Mohamed Salah’s goal was disallowed last night.

The Egypt international thought he had put Liverpool 5-1 up after coming off the bench, only for his effort to be ruled out through offside.

However, pictures show that Salah was onside, with Klopp even stating that Liverpool “checked” the footage after full-time.

The 56-year-old told TNT Sports: “Mo’s goal was wonderful. Not sure where that offside situation was because we checked it, and Mo was not offside.”

Fortunately, the decision did not cost Liverpool a win, and Klopp now takes a healthy four goal lead back to Anfield for the second leg.
