'Little bit early': Micah Richards says 'outstanding' Liverpool player isn't ready to play for England yet

Micah Richards has now confessed that he feels it’s still a little bit too early for one Liverpool player to be considered for England.

Jurgen Klopp will currently be preparing his Liverpool side for a visit from Sheffield United tomorrow night, hoping another three points will be collected.

And whilst there’s some talk among fans of this being an excellent opportunity to improve the club’s goal difference with the title race in mind, Klopp won’t be taking anything for granted.

Chris Wilder’s side have mostly been poor this season, but occasionally prove their goalscoring power as Fulham found out on Saturday.

Ben Breteton Diaz is a danger every game for opposition defences, and Liverpool’s back line will need to work diligently.

Liverpool haven’t kept a single clean sheet at Anfield in the league in 2024, with a 0-0 draw against Manchester United the last in December.

A record they’ll hope to correct tonight, and it’ll be interesting to see who Klopp picks in his back four, given all the options he has.

Micah Richards thinks Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah isn’t ready for England yet

That being said, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Jarell Quansah kept his spot alongside Virgil van Dijk, even if Ibrahima Konate is watching on.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed an excellent debut season, showcasing his vast array of talent.

And with that considered, Micah Richards has been sharing his view on the prospect of Quansah soon playing for his country.

Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Richards felt as if the Liverpool youngster wasn’t ready for England just yet.

He explained: “He’s not played every single game and he probably wouldn’t be playing if other players were fit.

“But yeah I think the factor of playing alongside Van Dijk has obviously helped him, if it was say Quansah and [Joe] Gomez and he was playing at the same level, I’d probably agree with that [idea of going to the Euros].

“He has been outstanding for a young player, especially in the Man City game when they had [Conor] Bradley at right back and him centre-half.

“I believe that he really showed his maturity in that game, but in terms of England, I think it’s a little bit early for him.”

Gary Lineker then replied: “I think I concur on that one.”

Perhaps Richards would agree that the Liverpool defender could be part of England’s next cycle of players once the Euros are concluded, though.

Gareth Southgate isn’t blessed with top level centre-backs, and perhaps his replacement could turn to Quansah in the near future.

All that being said, it was a different Liverpool youngster who amazed Alan Shearer at the weekend.
