Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the very best players in the world.
The Dutch defender has been the standard-bearer for centre-backs in world football over the past half a decade, and while he’s had his ups and downs, he’s back to his best now.
Indeed, even Van Dijk himself would admit that he wasn’t firing on all cylinders last season, but now, he’s playing out of his skin as Liverpool push for the Premier League title.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has been discussing the centre-half’s performances this season, and he says that the defender is now back to his best after having a bit of an off season last time around.

Sherwood shared his verdict on the £75m man.
“Van Dijk, he’s back to his best, he’s like a Rolls Royce of old, he had a bit of a sabbatical last year where he wasn’t at his best with injuries, but him and Alisson at the back, it just feels like they’re not going to concede any goals if they don’t score,” Sherwood said.
Unbelievable
It’s very hard to put into words just how good Van Dijk has been this season.
The centre-back has recovered from last season’s setback brilliantly and he’s looking every bit as good as he did in his prime before his injury.
The fact that Van Dijk is able to play in this way after such a serious injury at the age of 32 is a testament to how hard he works and how fantastically talented he is.
At his best, Van Dijk finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting, and if he can keep up this performance level, he may well be in and around that mix again come the end of this season.
As Sherwood says, Van Dijk has been fantastic this year, and he could well lead the Reds to a league title.
