'Let's be honest': Ally McCoist says 58-year-old manager should not be taking the Liverpool job

Ally McCoist has commented on whether he thinks Ange Postecoglou could leave Tottenham Hotspur to take the Liverpool job in the summer.

Who Liverpool decide to appoint as their next manager is going to be one of the most fascinating topics of the next few months. Of course, Jurgen Klopp has already confirmed that this season will be his last on Merseyside.

Unsurprisingly, a number of names appear to be in the frame. Xabi Alonso is the favourite for the Liverpool job as things stand. Meanwhile, Thomas Frank has commented on the links with Liverpool.

Ally McCoist doesn’t think time is right for Ange Postecoglou to go to Liverpool

But another name on the Reds’ radar is Ange Postecoglou. The Tottenham boss has won a lot of admirers with the work he has done since arriving in North London last year.

Spurs play some of the most exciting football in the Premier League. And Postecoglou may well take Tottenham back into the Champions League next season.

Some have insisted that Postecoglou has to be in the conversation for the Liverpool job. But speaking on talkSPORT this morning, Ally McCoist suggested that he would advise the Australian against moving to Anfield if the chance presented itself.

“Timing is everything. And I don’t think the timing would be right. And people will say, ‘well, you might not get another opportunity to go to Liverpool’. We all love him, let’s be honest about it. Yourself, myself, the vast majority of people are really enjoying his work at Tottenham,” he said.

“They’re in pole position after Brennan Johnson’s late winner at the weekend to get Champions League football in fourth place. I actually think they’ll probably do that. I think he’s got them playing, he’s got people on the edge of their seats.”

Spurs fans may be concerned about Liverpool make move

Postecoglou has had to be patient during his managerial career. And he showed with his move from Celtic to Tottenham that he is prepared to be ruthless when he needs to be.

Given that he is a boyhood Liverpool fan, he would surely struggle to turn the job down. By the time Klopp steps aside, the Reds will have had two managers in the last 12 years. So he would be forgiven for wondering if the opportunity would come up again if he said no.

It does appear that Xabi Alonso is the favourite for many. But some Spurs fans may be worried about what may happen if Liverpool make a move for Postecoglou.
