Alexis Mac Allister slammed home a wonderful goal in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United on Thursday night, as he continues to drag The Reds towards a possible Premier League title this season.

Liverpool had struggled in a match they were fully expecting to win, against Sheffield United. With the scoreline reading 1-1, Darwin Nunez’s opener was cancelled out by defender Conor Bradley’s own goal.

The Reds dominated but could not find the breakthrough – until, Mac Allister took advantage of a loose ball on the edge of the box, absolutely smashing one into the top corner. A wonderful goal from him.

A remind to all of his importance to Liverpool, days after his gorgeous assist for the winner in a 2-1 victory over Brighton. The World Cup winner is proving to be the driving force in Liverpool’s title hunt.

Cody Gakpo got the third late on and Mac Allister raved about the Dutch forward on TNT Sports after the match – explaining how much the 24-year-old attacker is working hard behind the scenes at Liverpool.

“Let me say something, I’m really happy for this guy. He’s been working very, very hard. He’s one of these guys that works very hard. He’s always positive and a good leader for the group. I’m very happy for him.”

The stats… is Gakpo living up to expectation at Liverpool?

This season, Gakpo has improved. Joining Liverpool in January 2023, the Dutch attacker only managed seven goals and three assists in his intial 26 outings during the second half of last season for The Reds.

But this term, Gakpo has 14 goals and five assists – despite only starting 25 of 44 games, completing 90 minutes on just seven occasions for The Merseyside outfit. Gakpo is acting well as a back-up striker.

When he joined from PSV, though, the expectation was he could be the long-term replacement for Sadio Mane on the left. Something he has failed to do. He is not first choice. More to come, maybe, from him.
