Journalist James Pearce has shared what he has heard about the chances of Mohamed Salah making his return for Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.
Mohamed Salah has not featured for the Reds since scoring in the 4-1 win over Brentford last month. The Egyptian was making his first appearance following the Africa Cup of Nations.
Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the Carabao Cup final, as well as the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend. He also missed the wins over Luton Town and Southampton.
Mohamed Salah set to feature for Liverpool on Thursday
But ahead of this Thursday’s Europa League clash with Sparta Prague, Liverpool have received a boost.
Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesSpeaking on Walk On, Pearce suggested that there is hope that he will feature in the Czech Republic ahead of the massive game against Manchester City this weekend.
“As we’re sat here now, the big unknown is what kind of role, if any, Mohamed Salah is going to be able to play. He’s certainly close,” he said.
“The last I heard was that the hope was he could potentially have a role off the bench in the Europa League. In an ideal world, you’d want to see him get 20-25 minutes in Prague, and then be in decent enough shape to start against City on Sunday.”
Huge boost for the Reds
Obviously, Jurgen Klopp is highly unlikely to take any risks with Salah in the Europa League game. So if he does feature, it is obviously a sign that he is in good shape.
Winning the Europa League would be a boost for Liverpool. It is the only major honour Jurgen Klopp is yet to win during his time at Anfield.
But clearly, the priority is the game against Manchester City. And Klopp will want to judge just how much of the game against Pep Guardiola’s side Salah can probably get through.
Liverpool have done brilliantly without their talisman in the last few games. But having Salah for their biggest league game of the season yet may be exactly what they need to give them that extra lift.
