After a difficult April, Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Fulham kept Liverpool’s Premier League title dreams alive.

April had been a slow disaster of a month for Liverpool, with Jürgen Klopp’s Reds slipping out of pole position in the league and knocked out of the Europa League on the back of four poor results in a row. Sunday against Fulham, they needed to be better to try to salvage a season slipping away.

They were, in the end, easing away from the Cottagers in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory that keeps them in the mix in the title race, though Arsenal still hold a significant goal differential advantage and Manchester City will be two points ahead if they can win their game in hand.

“From my point of view, that was the best performance we’ve had against Fulham away,” the Liverpool manager said. “We won the last game—nobody felt that really but we won against Atalanta. It didn’t help but it was still a win. And I thought there’s a good chance we’d make the next step today.

“We tried that and the boys did that and it was really good. We just played a really good football game. We had one or two tricky situations when we lost the ball in an unnecessary moment [but] I’m really happy with the performance. Now we have to recover because we play on Wednesday again.”

Things don’t get any easier with a mid-week league tie against Everton, with the Reds’ local rivals under threat of relegation and desperate for a result. Following that Wednesday derby match they then face West Ham on Saturday in the dreaded early kickoff. Both games, it’s fair to say, are must wins.

“We should have won games, we didn’t,” Klopp added of recent setbacks. “That’s not great, but we created a lot and are in the situation we are because of the character of these boys. Nobody expected us to be here and here we are. That’s because of the boys. So I’m really happy with today.

“We made changes, now we play Wednesday and then we play on Saturday in London again, which is crazy enough but is how it is. Maybe if we keep it exciting then in the end fortune is maybe on our side. We just have to try to win as many games as possible, as many points as possible.”
