Liverpool will hope to reduce the gap between themselves and the Premier League summit when they head to Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are currently second in the table, five points behind Arsenal, who won their matchweek 15 game on Tuesday night.

Liverpool will have to take on the Premier League’s bottom side without Joel Matip, who sustained a knee injury in the weekend win over Fulham and will undergo a scan.

According to the likes of The Guardian, the Reds are sadly expected to be without the 32-year-old for months due to the knee ligament injury.

With Matip out, Klopp will have to pick between Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk in defence.

Liverpool have a star in the making in Jarell Quansah

We feel that the Liverpool boss will opt for Quansah on this occasion, for a number of reasons.

One could be as reward for his efforts and development this term, and the other could be a mix of the quick turnaround in games and the fact they’re up against ‘weaker’ opposition on paper.

Obviously Liverpool will have to be at their best against Sheffield United, who could well have the ‘new manager bounce’ with Chris Wilder now in the dugout.

However, Quansah has already proven himself at the highest level. Besides, the more starts he gets, the more experience he’ll gain, which is the best thing in the short and long term.

Klopp, speaking to the Liverpool media team in September, said the 20-year-old is a “fantastic” talent who had a “super” pre-season. He suggested he’d keep picking him, and that has proven the case.

Quansah has made 10 appearances for the Reds and, the way he’s going, there will no doubt be many more on the horizon.
