Klopp could now start 'absolutely exceptional' 20-year-old for Liverpool tonight, starting XI audition time - opinion

Liverpool have found themselves in the midst of a fresh injury crisis as they prepare to take part in two matches this week.

Jurgen Klopp‘s Reds have the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea to contest at the weekend. But before they do that, they face a tricky encounter against Luton Town.

Liverpool are hosting the Premier League relegation battlers at Anfield on Wednesday night in a 7:30pm kickoff.

Reds duo Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota have not long been ruled out after picking up injuries against Brentford last time out.

Meanwhile, the game comes too soon for the likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai.

And with Klopp needing to prioritise his big guns for Sunday, he’ll likely not risk the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez from the off.

With that in mind, there’s a good chance we may see Harvey Elliott handed a start in attack and get a chance to stake a claim for a regular starting spot.

Harvey Elliott ‘incredibly important’ for Liverpool

The 20-year-old has played in all but four Premier League matches this term for Liverpool, regularly coming off the bench and making a big impact for the Reds.

However, Elliott has started just four league games, and considering what a talent he is, Klopp addressed his lack of game time not long ago.

“Harvey has been incredibly important and I’m sure he knows that,” the Liverpool boss said last week, as per BBC Sport.

“Is it that he wishes to start every game? Yes. probably, but when he has come on he is brilliant, when he has started it’s not the same.

“It’s not a problem. He’s young – it’s not like for the rest of his career he’ll be a ‘super-sub’ or what the public call him.

“Learn the game, understand your game, use your skillset to get better and better. There is a lot he is doing well and there is more he can do.

“Of course there is a lot of potential in him. He is a joy to work with. It is absolutely exceptional how he has trained this week.”

The likes of Paul Gorst and Theo Squires from the Liverpool Echo have predicted that Elliott will start in attack for Liverpool against Luton.

Let’s hope this is the case. If so, it’ll be a good audition for a regular spot in the starting XI for one of the best young players at Anfield.
