'Jurgen will ask': John Aldridge says Klopp could now play Liverpool star in different position v Brentford

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has backed Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to play one of his stars in a different position this weekend.

The Anfield icon, writing in the Liverpool Echo, believes Klopp will move Alexis Mac Allister in a deeper position when the Reds face Brentford on Saturday.

Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners over Burnley last time out, and while Mac Allister wasn’t bad, he wasn’t amazing either.

He played as the right-sided No. 8 in wake of Wataru Endo’s return, but he didn’t influence the game as much as he would’ve hoped.

Prior to Saturday’s match, Mac Allister enjoyed a great run of performances at No. 6, so his positioning will be something for Klopp to think about.

Alexis Mac Allister likely to be asked ‘to drop a little deeper’ for Liverpool

Aldridge believes the Liverpool boss will shift the Argentina international back into a more deep-lying role in Saturday’s 12:30pm Premier League kick-off.

“Mac Allister was played in his more favoured No.8 position against Burnley but I thought he had one of his quieter games as a result,” said Aldridge.

“I don’t think Jurgen will necessarily need to change the system but winning the second balls and coming out on top in the midfield scrap will be imperative to getting a good result in west London.

“So I think this will be where Jurgen will ask Mac Allister to drop a little bit deeper next to Endo at times to close those spaces and make sure Brentford don’t make the most of those second balls around the Liverpool penalty area.

“It’s all about your starting positions and there will be work to do on the training pitch this week for that.”

Mac Allister may favour playing at No. 8, but on Saturday, it did feel like he was playing out of position. He didn’t impact on the game in an advanced position as he normally does at No. 6.

With that in mind, it looks likely that the 25-year-old will return to a DM position, particularly considering the threat that Brentford will pose.
