Jason McAteer tells Peter Schmeichel 56-year-old would 'manage Everton before Manchester United'

Several big clubs across Europe are set to change managers this summer from Liverpool to Bayern Munich.

It has been well documented that Jurgen Klopp will depart, Thomas Tuchel will also leave his role, Xavi Hernandez has decided to stay at Barcelona, whilst there is huge pressure on those in the Manchester United and Chelsea dugouts.

In Erik ten Hag’s case, he has been in charge of Manchester United since the summer of 2022, so there is more criticism at his door, especially after they dropped points against Burnley on Saturday in the Premier League to further dent their European hopes.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have just entered the building, they are making wholesale changes in the boardroom, with no clear idea as to whether they will stick with ten Hag for next season or not.

If he does leave Old Trafford in the summer, then that’s another big job available for someone to take, and just like Liverpool with Arne Slot, a new chapter will begin at the club.

This was a topic discussed by the beIN SPORTS panel, with the name of Tuchel first popping up and Peter Schmeichel being reluctant to discuss his name, at first.

The legendary goalkeeper eventually admitted that if there was a change in manager at Old Trafford, then Tuchel would be a good fit, just like a certain Klopp over on Merseyside.

But when the name of the soon-to-be-departing Liverpool boss was discussed, Jason McAteer was having none of it.

The former Red was flabbergasted by that suggestion and even claimed that Klopp would ‘manage Everton’ before he would even consider a gig at Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp as Manchester United manager

“Klopp would be fantastic for Manchester United as well, you know what I am saying,” said Schmeichel.

“It’s that kind of category. I am not saying he should be the manager. I know this would be hard for you (looks towards Jason McAteer and consoles him).”

McAteer responds: “What? Klopp? I am telling you now that he won’t be. He would manage Everton before Manchester United.”

Will Manchester United follow Liverpool?

It was a shock for Liverpool fans when Klopp decided he was going to leave and now they are preparing for a new chapter.

That wasn’t planned and you feel the next man through the door might find life very difficult simply because of who he is going to replace.

But has ten Hag’s future already been decided for him? Does he need to win the FA Cup to stand a chance of staying on?

In terms of the Premier League, they are sitting in sixth spot, but only five points separate them in sixth and West Ham United in eighth.

If things continue to go wrong in the Premier League, then ten Hag’s future might just be decided for him.
