The young centre half impressed massively for Liverpool last season but few were expecting his inclusion in the England provisional squad.
Of Liverpool’s four English players on Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, it’s likely fair to say that Jarell Quansah has the longest odds of making the final roster heading to the tournament in Germany this summer.
While Trent Alexander-Arnold seems a lock, and Joe Gomez’ positional flexibility is likely to see him included, the inclusion of Quansah in the provisional squad along with Curtis Jones surprised many given the duo have yet to earn a senior England cap.
On the strength of his season, though, there’s a solid case Quansah deserves a place in the final squad. And he most certainly deserves the nod of recognition that he was given by being included in England’s provisional squad.
“I’ve been dreaming since I was young for this opportunity, so I’m buzzing,” Quansah told reporters as he arrived this week at the England camp. “When I got the call I was buzzing and [my family] were buzzing for me. Probably crying, to be honest.”
Following the injury to Joël Matip at Liverpool and with Gomez needed as cover at the fullback—and occasionally midfield—positions, Quansah established himself with Ibrahima Konaté as a rotational partner for Virgil van Dijk.
All told, the 21-year-old Liverpool academy graduate played 33 first team games last season for the Reds. If he makes the cut with England his tournament will kick off against Serbia on June 16th, with Denmark and Slovenia to follow in Group C.
