James Pearce now shares what Liverpool told him about the new Super League yesterday morning

The Super League is threatening to rear its ugly head again.

Two and a half years ago, a number of elite clubs threatened the fabric of the sport of football by forming a breakaway league that would basically mean that this sport was no longer a level playing field for everyone.

Luckily, after numerous protests and plenty of backlash, all six English clubs involved in this process backed out, while a number of other European sides did the same.

However, this week, an EU Court ruling has put the idea of The Super League back on the table, and many are, once again, starting to worry about the formation of this new competition.

Many English clubs have released statements ensuring that they will not be joining any new league, but, as of yet, Liverpool haven’t put out such a statement in writing.

However, that isn’t to say that their stance is any different.

Indeed, speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, James Pearce has now shared what he knows about the Reds’ stance on the Super League, and he says that he was told on Thursday morning that the club’s stance is unchanged.

Liverpool remain unchanged on Super League

Pearce shared what he’d heard from the club.

“James, you’ve spoken to the club this morning, what is their position on it?” Pearce was asked.

“Well, Liverpool insist that their position is unchanged on it. I don’t think this rule changes anything really. It wasn’t a legal barrier that stopped Liverpool signing up back in 2021. It was the force of the backlash that led to FSG issuing a really grovelling apology at the time. I did an interview with Tom Werner, Liverpool’s chairman, last year, and he said that they will not go back in, Liverpool say that their stance remains exactly the same on it,” Pearce said.

No going back

This is great to hear.

In the back of these owners’ minds, The Super League may always be a tempting prospect, but the reality is that there’s no going back to this idea.

After issuing apologies and admitting that The Super League would be bad for the sport and for the fans, this is a U-turn that can never happen, especially not just two years on from last time.

Liverpool won’t be back in The Super League, and that’s good news for the sport.
