A disappointing final two months of the 2023/24 season saw the Reds fail to win both, the Premier League and the Europa League titles. Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool with just one trophy in his final campaign, which is a shame.
Now, the focus is on Slot. Liverpool fans are excited to see what he can do at Anfield, and Lineker has already offered him some advice on one player.
Gary Lineker tells Arne Slot to change Trent Alexander-Arnold’s position at Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool’s best players.
The England international is one of the best right-backs in the world. His passing is out of this world, and some of his performances in the famous red shirt have been magnificent.
One of the biggest debates in the Premier League in recent years has been about Alexander-Arnold’s defending.
The full-back has often struggled against quick wingers at right-back, and he has come under enormous criticism as a result.
Many people, including Gary Lineker, think there’s a simple solution to fix this issue.
The pundit has claimed that he really hopes Arne Slot will convert Alexander-Arnold into a midfielder instead of using him as an inverted full-back.
The Liverpool star has played there before for club and country, and he has performed really well in that role. It definitely suits him.
However, Klopp was always reluctant to deploy him there, Lineker is hoping Slot will view the matter differently.
He said on the Rest is Football podcast: “Well, he’s still playing right-back, for Liverpool, isn’t he? He occasionally played in midfield but he’s kind of the inverted full-back. He goes and does what he wants.
“I hope the new manager, when he comes. plays Trent in midfield at Liverpool. I think that’s his position, I really do, always have. It would be lovely to see him play there regularly.”
There’s another thing Slot needs to do with Alexander-Arnold
Arne Slot has a massive job on his hands.
Replacing a great manager like Jurgen Klopp is never easy. The German is one of the best managers in the world, and the standard he has set at Liverpool will be difficult to match.
Along with that, Slot has to sort out the contracts of three of Liverpool’s most important players.
Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all enter the final year of their deals this summer, and Liverpool have a big decision to make.
An argument can be made about letting Salah and Van Dijk go because of their age, but Alexander-Arnold is the future of the club, and Liverpool just can’t afford to lose him.
Slot needs to have a chat with the Englishman and convince him to pen a new contract as soon as possible.
