Dietmar Hamann has given his verdict on whether or not Xabi Alonso would leave Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool and replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.
Alonso is reportedly a prime candidate to become the next Liverpool manager.
So, what has Dietmar Hamann said about Liverpool and Xabi Alonso? Let’s take a look.
Dietmar Hamann backs Xabi Alonso for Liverpool move
Well, Jurgen Klopp announced last week that he will step down as the Liverpool manager at the end of the season.
A number of managers have already been linked with Liverpool. Julian Nagelsmann is among them, and so is former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui.
According to journalist Dean Jones in SportsLens, former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is one of the early favourites.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has also reported in GiveMeSport that the 42-year-old is a prime contender for the Liverpool managerial job.
Alonso is in charge of German club Bayer Leverkusen at the moment. Bayer could beat the mighty Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title this season.
Former Liverpool and Germany international defensive midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes that if Liverpool offered Alonso the managerial role at the end of the season, then he would take it.
Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty ImagesHamann said about Alonso to Liverpool speculation on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy podcast: “Well, the story coming out of Leverkusen, he extended his contract earlier in the season but I’m sure they’ve got an agreement so that if he wants to leave in the summer, he can go.
“As a football romantic, I would love to see him do another season at Leverkusen.
“But the problem might be, can they keep the team together because they’ve got some outstanding players, I think one or two will leave which obviously will harm their chances next season.
“I think if Liverpool come calling, I think it’s very hard to turn down, even though he follows in Klopp’s footsteps. But the thing is, sometimes the big clubs, they only come once.
“If somebody comes in in the summer and does well, the job might not be on offer for five or six years, or maybe nine years if they find another Klopp. So, I think if Liverpool come calling, I think he’ll take it.”
My View: Xabi Alonso should take Liverpool job
In my view, if Liverpool came for Xabi Alonso, then the former Real Madrid midfielder should take the managerial role.
Alonso played for Liverpool and will know how big and historic the club is.
Yes, he is just starting his managerial career, but the chance to manage a historic club such as Liverpool does not come often.
Moreover, Liverpool have a very good and strong squad. Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold all are superb players, so Alonso would not need to ‘rebuild’ the team.
