Paul Merson believes that Kostas Tsimikas will be dropped when Liverpool face Manchester City on Saturday, suggesting that Joe Gomez will get the nod instead.
Merson was speaking to Sportskeeda as he backed the Cityzens to clinch the victory this weekend, provided that Erling Haaland is fit for the game.
Kostas Tsimikas has featured in all of Liverpool’s last four Premier League games following the injury to Andy Robertson. He went on to provide two assists in their win over Brentford before the international break.
Paul Merson thinks Kostas Tsimikas won’t start for Liverpool this weekend
Jurgen Klopp has previously suggested that Tsimikas will not start every game while Robertson is sidelined. And Paul Merson believes that he may now be rested this weekend.
Photo by Visionhaus/Getty ImagesMerson claimed that Liverpool will be looking to be at their best at the back. And with that, Klopp may leave Tsimikas on the bench.
“If Haaland is fit, then I think City edge this. I think there will be goals in this one. Both managers play an attacking brand of football. However, it’s tough to go against City at home,” he told Sportskeeda.
“Liverpool have a few selection headaches. I think they’ll play Joe Gomez at left-back instead of Kostas Tsimikas. He is more of a defender and he’ll tuck in. You’ve gotta be able to defend against City.”
Fantastic opportunity for Jurgen Klopp’s side
It is going to be a fascinating contest. Liverpool may not yet be back to their very best, but they find themselves second in the division. And they are just one point behind Manchester City in the table.
City meanwhile, have dropped points in three of their last six league games. So the result is definitely not a formality.
But the decision over who starts at left-back is going to be an interesting one. Tsimikas is a ‘fantastic’ player. And he has produced some impressive performances for the Reds when he has come in.
Gomez however, is a decent option at full-back. He is yet to rediscover his best form from a few years ago. But he remains a very solid performer for Liverpool.
