'It's really simple': Jenas suggests one decision Liverpool made this summer was their biggest ever mistake

Jermaine Jenas has told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel that selling Sadio Mane was a huge mistake from Liverpool in the summer, and their recruitment in the window was poor.

The Reds’ start to the season has been extremely concerning. Jurgen Klopp’s side sit ninth in the Premier League table having only won two of their opening seven games.

They also suffered a heavy defeat in their opening Champions League group-stage clash. And it does appear that they are being punished for not doing more in the summer.

Selling Mane was a huge mistake

Obviously, they came agonisingly close to winning four trophies last season. But it is hard to argue that they have moved forward.

Darwin Nunez will surely come good at some stage. But there is no question that he has made a poor start. Meanwhile, they lost Mane to Bayern Munich. The Senegalese more than played his part in helping the club take that next step and win silverware on a consistent basis.

Certainly, Jenas thinks that Liverpool letting Mane leave was about as big an error as the club have made.

“I think it’s really simple with Liverpool. Selling Mane was the biggest mistake they’ve ever made,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.

“So when you talk about the press now and people might go: ‘well, Luis Diaz does this, that and the other’, nobody set the press or set the example or worked as hard as Mane did. And they got themselves into a bit of a pickle from a contractual point of view. I just think their business has just knocked them for six a little bit.

“Darwin Nunez is not working. Midfield, how they didn’t highlight the midfield knowing the injuries that they’ve had consistently for years, how they’ve not highlighted that and got some youth in there. Their recruitment this year has been poor.”

Liverpool had to start process of moving on at some stage

Liverpool’s squad had to evolve at some stage. Both Mane and Mohamed Salah were, at one stage, out of contract this coming year. So the Reds could not risk losing both in the same window.

Nunez has been considered one of the most exciting strikers playing in Europe. And it would be absolutely mad to write him off.

It was always going to be difficult to immediately move the side forward when replacements were needed for the previous crop. They had established themselves as one of the greatest sides in the history of one of the most illustrious clubs in world football.

Right now, they are probably missing Mane. But ultimately, they will hope that the moves they made in the summer will eventually lead to them moving forward again.
