'It's possible': Former teammate of 'confident' manager says he's desperate to take over at Liverpool

From now until the end of the season, there’s bound to be a lot of speculation regarding who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

There are a few obvious candidates for the job, with perhaps Xabio Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi leading the way.

And then you have the likes of Ruben Amorim or Julian Nagelsmann, who could easily attract the decision makers on Merseyside.

And of those four names mentioned, you’d have to imagine any would jump at the chance to replace Klopp at Liverpool.

The German isn’t leaving a huge rebuild behind, rather he’s set the club up brilliantly for the next incumbent.

And with that in mind, Bastian Schweinsteiger has now been discussing how much a former teammate of his would love the job.

Schweinsteiger was covering the Bayer Leverkusen game for ARD in Germany on Tuesday and confessed just how much their manager Alonso would want the role.

Moreover, the pundit really believed that the switch could happen this summer, even if he wanted the Spaniard to remain in the Bundesliga for selfish reasons.

Bastian Schweinsteiger thinks Xabi Alonso would love to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Speaking during the live broadcast, Schweinsteiger explained how crucial Alonso has been to the title race in Germany this year.

He said: “I know Xabi and I believe that it is his big dream to coach Liverpool one day. I certainly think it’s possible that he will move to Liverpool in the summer.”

“I want him to stay in the Bundesliga for a bit longer because he is a godsend for the Bundesliga.

“Were it not for Leverkusen being so good, Bayern would already be miles ahead in terms of points.

“Then the situation would be different. But because Leverkusen are so good, we have a title race.”

Of course, Liverpool fans would surely love to see Alonso continue that success at his old club, leading a title charge in their first season after Klopp.

The transition won’t be easy, even if there’s an excellent foundation and squad in place, but a ‘confident’ manager like Alonso would seem perfect to replace Klopp at Liverpool.
