Dominik Szobszlai has been a revelation since signing for Liverpool this summer.
The Hungarian has come in and has immediately become one of the Reds’ most important players.
The £60m man was signed almost from nowhere in the summer, and speaking on the This Is Anfield YouTube channel, John Barnes has shared his delight about Liverpool uncovering this gem.
Barnes says that Arsenal or Man City never would’ve known about Szoboszlai claiming that Liverpool are one of the only teams that would’ve been able to uncover a player like Szoboszlai.

Barnes shared his verdict on the midfielder.
“Who would’ve known much about Dominik Szoboszlai beforehand? I’m sure City wouldn’t have looked at him or Arsenal, but with the way he plays in terms of what we want, that’s what we do, so yes it’s pleasing and it’s not a surprise, and we are well in the title challenge,” Barnes said.
Disservice
We can understand the point Barnes is making about Liverpool’s recruitment here, but he’s doing Arsenal a bit of a disservice.
Szoboszlai wasn’t exactly an unknown before he came to Anfield. He was a £60m player courted by many clubs.
Arsenal aren’t exactly terrible at finding these hidden gems. They picked out Gabriel Martinelli from Brazil’s lower leagues a few years ago, while Gabriel Magalhaes and Takehiro Tomiyasu weren’t exactly the most well-known players in Europe before heading to the Emirates.
Arsenal do just as much good work in the transfer market as Liverpool, and while they didn’t sign Szoboszlai, we’re sure the Gunners would’ve been well aware of his talents before he ended up at Anfield.
Barnes’ point still stands, Szoboszlai has proven to be a fantastic signing and Liverpool’s talent identification system has come up trumps again.
