Goalkeeping coach Dave Watson has suggested that he was left really surprised by Caoimhin Kelleher as Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United at the weekend.
Caoimhin Kelleher has received all kinds of plaudits since coming into the Liverpool side in recent weeks. Kelleher has been outstanding while Alisson Becker has been sidelined.
He produced a brilliant performance in the Carabao Cup final. And he appears to have barely made a mistake as Liverpool continue to battle on several fronts.
Caoimhin Kelleher criticised after Liverpool defeat
But he may not be entirely happy with his performance after conceding four times against Manchester United at Old Trafford. And he will certainly feel that he should have done better for Amad Diallo’s winner in the final moments of extra-time.

Speaking on The Football Fill-In, Watson insisted that the Republic of Ireland international will be kicking himself over not keeping the strike out.
“I think he has to save it. And I think 99 times out of 100, he would save that. I think it’s that comfortable for him. You don’t want to talk about Alisson missing, because he’s been really, really good for 10 or 11 games. When you get a run in a team like that, that’s why I think it was a surprise that he’s let this goal in, because he’s had some really good moments,” he said.
“It seems to go in so slow. I actually think he’s virtually there. He just has a slight movement maybe to his right. But I still think he’s never getting beat there.
“We can argue about the placement and all of that was perfect, but the ball can’t roll past your left hand that slowly and beat you at that moment in time. And goalkeeping at the very top level, that’s it. And it’s not nice to say, but Alisson would’ve saved that.”
Reds need to bounce back quickly
No-one will be more critical of Kelleher than the man himself. So he will need no-one to tell him that he should have made the save. However, he was far from being the only Liverpool player to make a costly mistake.
The Reds had the game in their grasp. But they kept making costly errors. And they were ultimately punished.
It will be a difficult defeat to accept over the international break. But Liverpool know that they have a brilliant opportunity to put things right.
