‘It’s not good enough’: Jamie Carragher unimpressed with 24-year-old Liverpool player vs Palace

Jamie Carragher was left unimpressed with one key Liverpool player during today’s clash against Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s side got off to yet another slow start on Sunday as Eberechi Eze handed Palace a surprise lead.

While Liverpool has their moments in the first half, with Luis Diaz going close, the Eagles deserved their lead heading into the break.

A well-worked move from Oliver Glasner’s men led to Tyrick Mitchell getting to the byline and Eze found himself with far too much space in the area.

Of course, Liverpool headed into today’s game eager to put in an improved display following a heavy 3-0 defeat to Atalanta on Thursday.

One player who received plenty of criticism following a shock defeat in the Europa League was Darwin Nunez.

Klopp stuck with the Uruguayan forward once again today but it’s fair to say that Nunez didn’t exactly repay his show of faith.

Liverpool improved in the second half, with Klopp turning to his bench to introduce Dominik Szoboszlai at halftime.

A brilliant chance fell to Nunez just before the hour mark but the 24-year-old was unable to convert.

Virgil van Dijk headed the ball down from an Andy Robertson corner but Nunez’s effort was saved by Dean Henderson.

And while speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher claimed that Nunez simply had to do better.

“He’s got to score that,” the Liverpool legend said. “It’s not good enough. Great save from the goalkeeper. I’m not sure if it just hits him but he does really well to keep it out.

“I’ve said Liverpool have looked dangerous from corners. He just gets his leg up there, he does really well Henderson.

“Darwin Nunez has got to score. How often do we say that.”

Just a few minutes after wasting a huge opportunity for Liverpool, Nunez was replaced by Diogo Jota.

Nunez has posted exceptional numbers for the Reds this season, having registered 31 goal involvements in all competitions.

But his lack of composure in the final third at crucial times can be a huge frustration for Liverpool fans, especially with Klopp’s side fighting for the title.

Nunez certainly wasn’t alone in being wasteful in front of goal today as several Liverpool players failed to take their opportunities.

Jota was denied by an excellent block just moments before Curtis Jones blazed his effort wide of the post after being sent through on goal.

Harvey Elliott also went close with a header after some good work down the left-hand side from substitute Cody Gakpo.

It turned out to be another frustrating afternoon for Liverpool as they struggled to convert their opportunities, much like the draw at Old Trafford last weekend.
